IPS 2012 – About the Competition Winners

A short while ago we announced the winners of our IPS 2012 prize draw and we thought we’d give you an update about their prizes…

Firstly, the first prize winner of our 6 month license of a show of their choosing (terms and conditions apply) was LWL-Museum für Naturkunde Westfälisches Landesmuseum mit Planetarium, Münster, Germany.

The planetarium in Münster, Germany, is part of a natural history musuem; it opened in 1981. The planetarium has a 20m dome and seats 250. It is one of the largest planetariums in Germany and has about 110,000 visitors annually. In 2010, a new fulldome projection system was installed which is among the most modern in the world, with an exceptional “8k” resolution of the projected image – to date, the only one of its kind in Europe. The planetarium is presenting shows on different topics, from star talks and general astronomy presentations to shows about spaceflight or natural history.

The winner of our runner-up prize was The St. Charles Parish Library Planetarium of Luling, Louisiana. Our little 3.0 has now been packaged up and is ready for his flight to the U.S.!

The St. Charles Parish Library Planetarium is a small, six meter dome attached to a public library. It is located just 32 kilometers west of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. For over thirty years, it has offered free, weekly, planetarium shows to the public. The planetarium also serves the local school systems and community organizations with its MEDIAGLOBE II star projector.

Cell! Cell! Cell! Making of Banner

Especially for you we’ve got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the anatomy of our biology Fulldome digital planetarium show, Cell! Cell! Cell!

We’ve selected a number of shots from the show and have deconstructed them to show some of the steps that go into making such a cell-tacular show.

For every show we make we go through an extensive production process, from carefully deciding which scenes to include and then building every last object inside the computer so it can be rendered for all to see.

Be sure to make each gallery full-screen to see all the details. If you head over to our Flickr page you can even download the 4k files (navigate to the original quality image) and see even more detail or put them up on your dome to experience them in all their immersive glory!
