BAP 2011 The aftermath…

September 23, 2011 9:48 pm

It seems like only last week we were getting ready for BAP 2011, the Planetaria event of the year for the UK and ROI. We’ve now had time to recover and reminisce over the events of the second weekend in September.

It was an early start for the astrochaps and chappettes of NSC Creative; we brought along new-girl Megan from the NSC Education Team for her first taste of BAP!

Our big news was official announcements and the screening of teaser trailers for ASTRONAUT 3D and We Are Aliens! They looked great on the Liverpool dome and were received with much excitement. A first for us was the screening of the in-production Fulldome film Cell! Cell! Cell! The content was still at “block-test” level but it was a great opportunity to get some feedback from the people who will hopefully be showing the film to the public and schools when it is finished. Despite our nerves of showing something that normally only the production team would see to so many people it was a great success and most people walked out of the dome genuinely having learnt something new!

The rest of the weekend was a lot of fun with some really interesting talks and demonstrations, great food and drink and the company of wonderful people. We can’t wait till next time, we have a feeling it will be a little closer to home also…

ECSITE 2011

July 19, 2011 9:23 pm

We had a fabulous time at the ECSITE conference at the amazing new Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw.  Not only do they have great exhibits including a robotic theatre, but they’ll also soon be showing two of our Fulldome shows “We Are Astronomers” and “Astronaut” in their state-of-the-art planetarium!

The conference was attended by over 800 people from science centres, museums, zoos, aquariums, universities and research organisations from around the world. Even President Obama made an appearance (but not at the conference unfortunately).

We met colleagues old and new and got some great feedback and interest in our new productions; a stereoscopic version of “Astronaut” and a new character driven Fulldome show on genetics explaining in our own unique style how all 70 trillion cells in our body are connected and how they work together to allow us to exist.  Coming Summer 2012!

Happy 10th Birthday NSC!

June 30, 2011 9:59 pm

Fulldome Celebration

It was the 10th Birthday of the National Space Centre, Leicester at the end of June (wow, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun!). To mark the occasion, the various teams that inhabit the building attached alongside the infamous rocket tower were set the task of creating something special for a birthday event held for employees past and present to attend; this of course meant creating some Fulldome magic here in the Studio.

We created a 360 degree immersive journey back to the opening of the centre and through its key moments over the years. There was a special section dedicated to staff members past and present and then onto a retrospective of NSC Creative’s 10 years of digital planetarium shows. The finale was a digital Fulldome firework display which was the perfect warm up to the real thing that blasted off outside over our rocket tower to end a marvelous evening.

Leicestershire Creative Business of the Year 2011

May 12, 2011 7:08 pm

We very proud to say that NSC Creative is Leicestershire Creative Business of the Year 2011! We beat off stiff competition to take home the award from the event which was held at De Montfort Hall in Leicester, UK on the 08/04/2011. The awards ceremony was the culmination of lots of hard work submitting applications, being interviewed and showing the judges our best creative and business skills.

Some of the key factors under consideration were:

  • Cutting edge creativity
  • Managerial and financial performance
  • Clear understanding of the market place
  • Potential for growth
  • The performance of the current business including sales and profit growth
  • Strategic vision for the business

It has always been our ambition to supply the highest-quality creative content to a diverse range of clients. We continue to expand our creative portfolio but this recognition as a successful business validates our hard work and that we are not just good at making pretty pictures!

Representing the team on the night was Paul, Aaron and Ruth who took one for the team and enjoyed a slap-up meal, entertainment from Rory Bremner and 1 or 3 celebratory glasses of wine.

If you’d like to see what the judges thought of us you can watch our nomination video below. It was produced for the awards ceremony by the organisers, enjoy.

We Are Astronomers @ IFF 2011

April 26, 2011 1:28 pm

IFF 2011 logo

It’s always so exciting going to a place for a first time and that’s what “We Are Astronomers” will be doing when it’s premiered in Portugal at IFF 2011.

IFF (Immersive Film Festival) is taking place from 29 April to May 1 at Centro Multimeios Espinho, Portugal. Sadly, none of the NSCC team will be going there physically but we will be there in spirit. We hope the festival is a massive success, Immerse Yourself!

We also have the short dome piece “Astronomer 2.0″ in the competitive section which is adapted from “We Are Astronomers”.

Check it out here but obviously it is much more awesome in a dome!

If you’re lucky enough to attend IFF we’d love to know what you think of “We Are Astronomers”. Comment on our blog or you can head on over to http://weareastronomers.com/
